The unfolding path of Brentford Arts Works
Watermans–>
We are a group of locals who came together when we heard of the rapid closure of Waterman’s Arts Centre on 11th April 2024. Watermans had been a thriving institution of live music, events, cinema, theatre and more for over 40 years but in recent years had changed the focus, leading to financial difficulties.
shocking news–>
At first locals felt confused, shocked and angry. An initial meeting at which councillors tried to convey answers was both animated and passionate and was soon followed by a second, more structured meeting at St Paul’s. Despite just 24 hours’ notice, nearly 100 people attended, and we gathered over 1300 signatures of support from the councils’ online petition and our own paper petition. Locals are clearly fired about this topic and remain so.
an opportunity
And this is where our story, the story we want to make yours, began.
It was clear that this groundswell of anger was a product of the passion we all share around arts and community. It was then that we realised, although Waterman’s was closed, it was in fact an opportunity.
An opportunity to galvanise and to offer arts and community activities that locals want.
An opportunity to ask you, parents, kids, teenagers, grandparents, singletons, school-goers what it is that YOU want.
