As people deeply entrenched in the world of arts, we find ourselves caught between frustration and cautious optimism. Despite ongoing dialogues aimed at reviving the beloved Watermans’ space, it’s impossible to overlook the growing dereliction that now marks its once lively halls.
You might ask, “Will Watermans ever re-open?”. The closure of the Watermans building is indeed a significant cultural loss. The planned arts center at Half Acre promised to breathe new life into our community, yet all we’ve encountered are delays and setbacks.
Recently, Hounslow Green Party voiced a sentiment shared by many: “Come on, Hounslow Council, the developer has pulled out, yet the old Watermans building is still sitting empty. Why not use the resources we already have instead of leaving Brentford without a cultural hub? Why are we wasting time and money while the building sits empty? We need a solution for the arts and community here in Brentford—now, not in some uncertain future!”
Brentford does deserve a clear answer: Will Watermans ever reopen?
To be honest, we just don’t know. As each day passes, the building’s continued deterioration makes the hope of reopening seem more like a distant dream. Is campaigning a waste of time? Brentford Arts Works believe that as long as there is a community that cares, no effort is wasted. We stand ready to support any viable plan that promises to restore Watermans to its former glory.
We feel a mix of sadness and resolve. Sadness for what we’ve lost, but resolve to keep pushing for what could still be. Let’s keep the conversations alive, keep questioning, and most importantly, keep believing that where there’s a will, there’s a way.
